Tom Mapes...

The Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame presents the 2005 Distinguished Service Award to Tom Mapes for his contribution to sports in our community from 1971 to 1985.

Tom initiated the Big Jax Super Sport of the Day program that aired over the local WJAK radio station. Over 4,000 awards were presented to local athletes and sports enthusiasts in this area for their accomplishments.

Working with amateur and professional coaches in the community, Tom was in constant contact with the daily happenings in local sports. From tee ball to college athletics, Tom broadcasts interviews with players and coaches on a daily basis. Everyone in the Jackson-Madison County area waited anxiously for the announcement of the individual selected to be the "Big Jax Super Sport of the Day." On an annual basis, one of the daily "Super Sports" was selected "Super Sport of the Year" and an entire day of broadcasting was devoted to the recipient's accomplishments.

Tom produced a number of documentaries about local sports figures including:

  • The Life of Tury Oman
  • Coach Johnny Williams and Sylvester Hicks career in football
  • Coach Duck Green's story of the state basketball tournament
  • John Hooper and the Old Hickory Academy football team
Tom was also well known for "The Quarterback Club" and "The Sports Commission" which were two of the original radio talk shows in the community.

The "Quarterback Club" included Judge Walter Baker Harris, John D. Graham, Harbert Alexander, Bon Conger, Melvin Wright, and Duck Green. The "Sports Commission" included Bill Boone, Jim Scott, Jim Diamond, Jack Russell, and Peggy Birmingham.

The "Saturday Morning Sports Page" program highlighted local Friday night football and basketball games with coaches and player interviews.

Tom spend the 1960s broadcasting the Union University baseball games, including the 1969 game between Union and the Baltimore Orioles. Tom has broadcasted many other special events.

Tom is married to Gail and has three daughters: Terri, Jennifer, and Marcie.
