Dan Morris...
The Jackson
Madison County Sports Hall of Fame presents the 2007
Distinguished Service Award to Dan Morris for his
contribution to sports in our community since 1974, and his
contribution to the Jackson Madison County Hall of Fame.
Dan is a native of Ashland City Tennessee, he earned his
bachelor's degree at the University of Tennessee Martin in
1974, and then began his work at The Jackson Sun in July of
1974. He worked in the sports department for 30 years, the
last 19 as sports editor. He is presently the Jackson Sun's
Public Service Editor and senior writer for special
projects.
In his 30 year sports writing career there were numerous
milestones that evolved in Jackson, including The Jackson
Madison County Sports Hall of Fame, the move of the NAIA
Division I Women's Basketball Tournament to Jackson in 1990,
and the realization of Double-A baseball at Pringles Park in
1998.
Dan covered thousands of area youth, high school, and
college sporting events, including numerous district,
regional, state championships by area teams. He reported
Jackson's first Golden Glove national boxing championship,
won by Jackie Beard and Donald Bowers, in Albuquerque, N.M.
in 1980.
Dan covered the University of Tennessee football games
for years, including the 1998 national championship game. He
was with Jackson's Ed Too Tall Jones and the Dallas Cowboys
at the 1979 Super Bowl in Miami, and he watched Al Geiberger
shoot a PGA record 59 at Colonial Country Club in Memphis in
1977, now known as the Fed Ex St Jude Classic. Dan also
covered two World Series, 19 college football bowl games,
and 21 national tournaments, while traveling 20 states for
major events.
Dan has won dozens of state and national writing honors,
including 14 Associated Press Sports Editors Awards, and 7
Best of Gannett honors.
Dan also was active coaching youth baseball teams for
eight years, including Madison North Dixie Youth teams that
won 3 championships.
Dan is married to the former Lisa Depriest, who was
inducted in The Hall of Fame in 1993. They have two children
A.J. 20, and Becca, 18. A.J. is on a baseball scholarship at
the Master's College in Santa Clarita, California, Becca an
All-State basketball and softball player at USJ, has signed
a basketball scholarship at Bryan College in Dayton
Tennessee. They are active members of Evangelical Community
Church, where Dan is a deacon.
