2004 High School Student
Athletes of the Year
Sheron
Taylor is the female athlete from
Jackson-Central Merry High School, playing
basketball , soccer, and track. She was the JV Best
Defensive player, the 10th grade Most Improved
Player, 11th grade Captain and Best Free Throw
Percentage as well as All District Tournament team
and All Academic Tournament Team. In soccer, Sheron
was the 9th grade Most Improved Player, 10th grade
All District 2nd team, 11th grade Captain's Award,
Player of the Week, All District Team, All District
Tournament Team. In track, she took 2nd in the 4 x
200 in the 11th grade, 2nd place in the 4 x 800 at
the Best of the West competition and 2nd place in
the 4 x 100 in the 12th grade. |
Daniel
Baker is the male athlete from Jackson-Central
Merry High School, playing football and baseball. In
football, he received the Coaches' Award all four
years, an All Region Honorable Mention and the
Senior Leadership Award. In baseball, Daniel made
the All District Team and the All Defensive Team in
the 10th grade and the All District Tournament Team
in teh 11th grade. |
Sarah
Pipkin is the female athlete from South Side
High School, playing volleyball, softball and
basketball. In volleyball, she was The Jackson Sun
Player of the Year, All District for 2003-2004, All
District Player of the Year for 2004, District
Tournament MVP for 2004, and Regional Tournament MVP
for 2004. She was selected to play in the East-West
Volleyball Match. Sarah averaged 14 kills per match
and a .956 serving percentage. In softball, Sarah
was All District in 2002-2003 and led her team in
fielding percentage. She has a .320 average and was
All West Tennessee in 2003. In Basketball, Sarah was
All District for 2002-2003 and led her team in
points per game, field goal percentage, 3 point
percentage, free throw percentage, block and
rebounds. |
Jason
Towater is the male athlete from South Side High
School, playing football and baseball. In football,
he was All Region in 2002 and 2003, All Region
Offensive MVP in 2003 and All West Tennessee. In
Baseball, Jason received the HAWK Award for
leadership and Best Base Runner Award for the most
stolen bases. He was also Best District. |
Andrew
Simmons is the male athlete from Trinity
Christian Academy, playing football, basketball and
baseball. In football, he had 50 completions on 163
attempts for 1,233 yards, 14 touchdowns and six
interceptions. He rushed for 356 yards on 84 carries
with five touchdowns. In basketball, Andrew averages
8.2 points per game, three assists, and 6.3
rebounds. In baseball, he has a .316 average and 14
RBIs with a .960 average field percentage. |
Elizabeth
Diffee is the female athlete from Trinity
Christian Academy, playing basketball, track and
cross-country. In basketball, she averaged 8.8
points per game, 4.2 assists, 31.2 three point
percentage and 4.7 steals. In cross-country,
Elizabeth medaled in every local contest with the
best time of 22.57. Her team was undefeated in local
competition, placed 1st in Best of the West, 1st in
Regional and 7th in State. In track, she was the
300m hurdles Regional Champion and was part of the 4
x 8 Regional Championship Team. |
Casey
Carpenter is the male athlete from Jackson
Christian School, playing football and basketball.
In football, he was All Region his sophomore, junior
and senior years, Kicker of the Year his junior and
senior years, All State honorable Mention his junior
year, All Madison County his junior and senior
years, and Captain of his team his senior year. He
has lettered three years and has a 26-10 career
record. In basketball, Casey was All District his
junior and senior year, All District Tournament Team
his junior and senior years, All Region MVP his
senior year, and Captain of his team his junior and
senior years. He has lettered all four years and has
936 career points and a 94-31 career record. |
Lauren
McLaughlin is the female athlete from Jackson
Christian School, participating in track, discuss
and soccer. She holds the school discuss record and
has received the Coaches' Award, Academic Award for
soccer, the Lady Flyer Award and numerous academic
awards including the highest GPA in her class. |
Quentin
Hurd is the male athlete from North Side High
School, playing football, basketball, and track. In
football, he was All Madison County 2002, 2nd Team
All Regional 7AAA, 1st Team All West Tennessee
Sportswriter Association AAAA All State. In 202, on
defense he had five interceptions, returned for 1003
yards, and had 36 tackles. On offense, he had 23
receptions for 368 yards and 16 yards average/catch.
In basketball, Quentin in the 6th man on the team
and plays small forward. He averages four rebounds
and four points per game. He has lettered in all
three sports. |
Rachel
Watson is the female athlete from North Side
high School, playing soccer, basketball and
softball. In soccer, she has served as the varsity
goalie for four years. She was selected All District
Team for three years and received the 2003 MVP Award
for District 13AAA. In Basketball, Rachel lettered
three of four years and has served as team captain
this season. In softball, she is a four-year letter
recipient and starting player first base. She was
All District in 2001-2002 and in 2002 received the
Best of the West Female Athlete of the Year Award
for District 13AAA. |
Shaina
Brown is the female athlete from the University
School of Jackson, participating in cross-country,
track & field. In cross-country, she was Best of the
West and went to the regional meet all four years,
finishing second her senior year. She earned a top
three finish in every Region 7 meet her senior year
and is a five-time recipient of the USJ Bruin Award
for dedication and team spirit. Shaina serves as
team captain; her best cross-country time is 19:57.
In track&Field, she was Best of the West and region
7A-AA Meet MVP and one and two mile champion. Her
best one-mile time is 5:41 and best two mile time is
12:26. |
Joseph
Dowsley is the male athlete from the University
School of Jackson, playing football. He was a
Wendy's High School Heisman State Finalist, All
State Linebacker, All Region 7A, Defensive Player of
the Year for Region 7A, The Jackson Sun All West
Tennessee Team, and an AP All Tennessee Honorable
Mention. As a linebacker, Joseph had 158 tackles
including 16 tackles for loss and one sack. He made
three fumble recoveries and one interception. As a
fullback, he had 81 attempts and 672 yards for an
8.3 average with 6 touchdowns and one two-point
conversion. |
Brittney
Holmes is the female athlete from Liberty
Technology Magnet High School, playing basketball.
She was All Division in 2003, Most Improved n 2003,
and Best defense in 2003. In 2003, she averaged
seven points and seven rebounds per game. In 2004,
she averaged seven points and seven rebounds per
game. In 2004, she averaged six points a game and
eight rebounds per game. |
Preston
Moore is the male athlete from Liberty
Technology Magnet High School, playing football and
baseball. In football, he was the school MVP and was
selected to the West Tennessee Football All Region
Second Team. He has served as the team captain and
was nominated for Wendy's High School Heisman and
Scholar Athlete for the Week. In baseball, Preston
has played pitcher, first base, third base, and
catcher. He has two wins and no losses, 17-2/3
innings pitched, 13 hits allowed, 3.17 ERA, eight
walks allowed, 18 strikeouts and .200 batting
average. |
Gwen
Holtzclaw is the female athlete from Madison
Academic Magnet High School, playing volleyball,
cross-country, basketball and track. She has
maintained a 4.0 GPA and was named MVP of the
volleyball, cross-country and track teams. She was
also selected to the All District Volleyball Team. |
Andrew
Hicks is the male athlete from Madison Academic
Magnet High School, playing basketball,
cross-country, bowling and baseball. He received the
honor of All District Team in basketball. He was
also the MVP in basketball and cross-country while
maintaining a 3.7 GPA. |
